DAY IN THE LIFE: FULL FRONTAL FASHION

(This is me feeling ANNOYED to have my photo taken)

Clearly I hate being in front of the camera, thats why I am all about behind-the-scenes. Which is perfect now that I am a contributing editor to Sundance Channel's Full Frontal Fashion website. Expect weekly posts (NOT DAILY) of the designer's I'm meeting with and the showrooms I'm visiting. This is essentially a peak into the daily activity of what a stylist/editor does when they are on photo shoots.

I started my week last Saturday @ the Brooklyn Flea.

SUNDAY:

So photo shoot time. People think this is glamourous and all I have to say is Sunday morning @ 7:30am after lugging 100 pounds of clothes, shoes and accessories up 5 flights is NOT my idea of Sunday Brunch.

MONDAY:


This is Sidney, a boy after my heart. He usually has me laughing so hard that I have hard cruel lines in my face after leaving his office. This picture really says it all. Sidney handles press for United Bamboo, Lela Rose, Rachel Comey, Thuy and a bunch of others... Usually when he throws something my way, I don't question it. I'll keep it on the rack even if it's something that I am unsure about. Sidney, you're always right. I shot your Rachel Comey red suede mini dress.

Next, I went to Thom Browne. Whose construction blows me away...Thom, you are a wonderful genius. Thank you for this bucket hat allows me to leave the house any day of the year without anyone having to see my face (with or without puffy eyes, acne, salt-bloating, facial extraction irritation).

After the shoot, the messenger left the garment bag (with this very jacket inside) on the MTA bus. WHO DOES THIS? It was lost for almost an entire day, but it was miraculously found and returned.
I thank God, Jesus, Mary Mother, Ghandi, Mother Teresa and to Molly Williams for keeping her cool.

Color My World

A couple nights ago after Fashion's Night Out, I prayed to God for guidance in the tumultuous times of the financial market (aka my depleting bank account), and asked for deliverance from temptation (Ann Demuelemeester boots and Rick Owens leather jacket). "All I see (in my closet) is too much black and white, show me a sign that you can lift me out of this conundrum."

Amen.

Last night God answered my prayers through the guise of the Proenza Schouler spring 2010 collection...

This season instead of my natural instinct to look for nudes, greys and blacks, my eyes go to white.
This is probably because my best friend is getting married and I am her bridesmaid.

Redhook

Every week I make a trip to my favorite grocery store, Fairway 

in Redhook, one of my favorite destination neighborhoods in Brooklyn.

Fairway is mecca holy land for people who like to cook with fresh ingredients, or

for those who love to stock up on a week's worth of breakfast, lunch and dinner without

breaking the bank. The selection of organic and farm raised poultry is impressive.

And instead of making trips to a local cheese shop or butcher, Fairway houses a knowledgeable helpful staff making your trip a one stop shop.

My favorite items to get are: 

1. cheese- because a woman isn't really a woman if she doesn't eat cheese.

2. olives - i heard that Mariah Carey got skinny on a diet of olives and champagne 

3. truffle oil - drizzle this and honey on a round of brie, then bake in the oven. A spiritual experience.

4. coconut water - historically used as intravenous fluid, which has saved lives among wounded soldiers, perfect for this accident prone walking disaster freak on two legs.

5. dark 85% chocolate - unlike any medication or glass of wine, chocolate has the power to lift me out of a K-hole.  Cocoa improves cardiac health, reduces risk of cancer, lung disease and diabetes. Way!

New Obsessions

My favorite bits from this documentary was when Karl Lagerfeld whispers to Mr. Valentino, "Between you and me, the rest of them are making rags." And by "them" Lagerfeld means all the other designers on this planet. 

I enjoyed commentary from Detroit native NYT fashion critic, Cathy Horyn, who never ceases to amaze me with her endless wit and shoot 'em -from -the -hips acid biting point of view.

This drink puts me closer in touch with God.

probably didnt know or want to know about.

I love LOVE.

The best thing Ive ever bought for $17.99 was probably Caldo Verde soup and Portuguese style Mushroom and truffle Croquettes at my favorite new restaurant, Macao Trading Company, but for $17.99 you can also get the first issue of LOVE, the new Conde Nast title that is the brainchild of Katie Grand, who is the genius/girl wonder of POP magazine... easily one of the most influential magazines during my School of Visual Arts tenure. (Back then buying an issue of POP was like a week's worth of ramen noodles.)

Praise the Lord for depicting Portland's own Beth Ditto of theGossip on the cover. You better work ( cover girl ), work it girl ( give a twirl ).
GIRLFRIEND sounds like a Black Janis Joplin. She evokes a sense of power that looks you in the eye and says "FUCK YOU!"

Affinity for Beth Ditto aside...LOVE profiles an assembly of icons, Marc Jacobs in drag, the legendary PAM (freaking) HOGG! And Courtney Love...need I say more? and the up and up, Gang Gang Dance.
And classsics such as Angelica Houston...<---MAMMA looks daaamn good. Michigan's best, IGGY POP! <---a god. This has got to be the best compilation of portraits and interviews I've ever seen in a good while. Question is, will they pull this amazingness off in the next issue?

Have you ever had one of those days when you stare blankly at your closet and wish you could throw out everything and start anew?
I'm starting over.

But it would be like slitting my wrists if I actually threw out my clothes. 

Clothes are like photographs...they hold a lot of meaning. Like, "I wore this in Paris when I was stranded on the corner of Rue Juh-na-say-pa"

I wish for 1 silhouette...in various techni-colors.

And its no coincidence that Dustin silk screened a racer-back sleeveless dress in an array of eye popping neon pink, orange, yellow, blue, green over poly-cotton pleated plaid.

Pipit was conceived by my friend, Dustin Horowitz, who is a recent recruit to the office (a.k.a. bro-town, late night marauder's, the soul rebels)

Cool parents, cool siblings and crazy aunts. i remember my mom bought me a shirt when i was 10 years old that had 9 skeleton skateboarders on it. their heads were holograms and whenever you looked at the head from side to side its eyes would bulge out and the tongue would stick out. in the center of the tee it said in shitty graffiti bubble letters "34th st." she got it for me at macys. it was the raddest shirt i have ever owned. a week later my friend and i were smashing spray paint cans in our garage and i slammed a rock on the can and it sprayed pink krylon paint all over me! mom tossed the t away and i was pink for a few days.....i have the best memory btw

Are you worried that your blog might offend a potential buyer, like a parent?
If parents don't buy funny t's for their kids based on what they read on my blog than they can go back to the far too liberal, politically correct, pacific northwest lives and eat organic food and cry about how someone is actually speaking the truth and doesn't give a shit about what they say or who they offend. i keep everything in my life as well as writing as honest as possible with nothing sugar coated. people like honest, that's what they get.

Speaking of parents, is your mom still disappointed by your blog?
My mom just want me to be successful, as any mom wants for her son, but even if you're the president of the usa it's still not good enough. she's supportive, but would probably have wanted me to finish college or follow through with my dreams of becoming a comedic actor (theres still time) rather than be an "artist". i always wanted to go to med school to become a plastic surgeon (was my goal as a kid) but decided to smoke pot and draw beavis and butthead style cartoons. she hates my blog by the way.

Where does the money from the Tshirts go?
Well i'm clean and sober so it doesn't go to a bar or dealer. the money goes into my business account which then goes to pay my parents back for the loan i took from them. so if you're reading this, go buy my tee's. the last thing i need is for them to do is charge interest fees.

Why should people buy your shirts vs someone else's shirts?
They should buy ed hardy. that's all i wear. support diamond encrusted tattoo flash art on t's!! support blood diamonds!!. not something crafted by hand drawings and hand printing.

Everybody is sick of this topic about the recession, but how is it affecting you?
It really sucks right now. i get defeated and my confidence level goes to below average just about everyday when i check my website emails, but i try to stay positive. at times i wonder if it's me, then i have to remember it's the economy and that no one is buying, not even chain dept stores! that's why i took a loan to start this company. i hope i get more orders so i don't have to stop this company and work at home depot. it's hard even getting freelance art work at companies that rip me off!

Whats your 2009 game plan?
Starting jan 1st. i'm writing a book based off my blog. i've been encouraged by dave black and hak for the past year to write one and they're the only people i listen to, so i took their advice and i'm writing one! i have a title, format, layout and general idea of what it's about and what it will look like. trust me, it's gonna be bizarre. it's even going to come with an activity book! it might take a year to do, but i work really hard at making my blog the best it can be with new and fresh stories and images updayed every few hours and day, so this book is going to be an extension of the blog times 10!!!.....also need to finish these 2 screen plays i've had in mind for a year or two now and would love to shoot the short of one story at the end of winter. it's a funny short piece. all my friends are in the cast which i made sure of. i only care about my friends and family and want everyone to be a part of my life as much as possible so made sure that everyone has a part in it. i would do ANYTHING for the wonderful and supportive people i have in my life. what's the point of having inspiring, supportive people in your life if you can't have them be a part of your vision?

also i 2009 i hope to finally get my big break and write for a living. i'm pretty bored of drawing these days.

What type of girl do you want to meet in 2009?
The only girl i'm looking for in the new year is a female beagle puppy.....but if i can't get that then a black chick with a fucked up weave would be just fine.


And the new york music scene is...
nyc bands? you mean nyc fashionistas/ scenesters that look cool holding guitars? 80% of the nyc bands blow! it's all based on fashion and the pretentious elite downtown cool scene. not sure how that qualifies as music though? all the music from these bands sound like shit they play in contempo casuals (i have 3 sisters, i know what's up)....i listen to slipknot and korn. i like the nyc group gang gang dance though. they're talented.

why not put some more meaning into what i do? sometimes i ask myself what the hell i'm doing dressing people?
but what i realize is that ive met some really awesome caring individuals. and at the end of the day its all about that creative process that you go through with others. its not about me, its about "we."
